China is building the world’s largest artificial island airport in Dalian, covering 20 sq km and set to cost $4.3 billion. Expected to be completed by 2035, it will surpass Hong Kong and Japan’s island airports in size. The Dalian Jinzhouwan International Airport will serve 80 million passengers annually, with an initial capacity of 43 million. It will have four runways and a terminal spanning 900,000 sq meters. The airport aims to boost Dalian’s economy and its role as a regional transport hub. However, concerns over its location on an artificial island include vulnerability to natural disasters and accidents. The project is part of China's broader $19.6 billion investment in 22 new airports.
