Whether you’re looking to start a new brick construction project or are entrusting for a remodel project, knowing how many bricks you need for a house not just help you avoid project cost overrun but also avoid delays in case of ordering less number of bricks.
Be it a load bearing wall, external or internal wall, partition wall, boundary wall for garden, retaining wall, brick pier, foundation, brick column, or any similar structure; knowing how many bricks you need will be pretty helpful.
I have got a lot of queries from my followers about “how many bricks needed to build a 2 bedroom house” or “how many bricks needs to build a 3-bedroom house”. Actually, the number of bricks doesn’t depend on the number of bedrooms. In fact, it depends on the size or floor plan area as well as the size of the plot / house.
If you make 2-bedroom house in a small size area the number of bricks will be less as compared to the same 2-bedroom house if you’re building on a large scale area. Because in that case the size/length of the bedroom and so of the walls will be more.
For a 2-bedroom house, you require 5,200 to 6,400 modular bricks. Mostly the built-up or covered area for a 2-bedroom house is around 650 to 800 square feet. But it all depends on your location as well as the dimension of the plot or lot size.
I’ll recommend you continue reading our today’s blog, because I’ve talked in detail about how you can estimate the require number of bricks for a typical size house, 2 bedroom, 3-bedroom, 4-bedroom, or 6-bedroom.
Brick Estimation Basics
Double brick/ Full Brick Masonry comprised of 8 inches or 200 mm thickness and commonly knowns as 8 inches brick masonry wall.
Singular brick/ Half Brick Masonry comprised of 4 inches or 100 mm thickness and commonly knowns as 4 inches brick masonry wall.

The standard size of modular bricks used in USA is 3- 5/8″ × 2-1/4″ × 8″ corresponds to depth, height and length . The mortar thickness for joint is 3/8”. Indian standard uses the size of brick 200 x 100 x 100 millimeters ( length x width x height)
Now if we use the size of the modular bricks, we can easily use below thumb rule to estimate brick work for a wall.
For a typical per square foot wall area, you need, on average, 4.5 modular bricks. So, for example if you have a 100 square foot of wall area; the require number of bricks will be 4.5 x 100 = 450 number of modular bricks.
Now, if you can estimate the total square foot brick wall area; you can use the above thumb rule to estimate number of bricks for per square foot house or a 2-bedroom, 3-bedroom, 4-or5-bedroom house.

How many bricks do I need to build a normal house?
The number of bricks being used in construction work depends upon the percentage of bricks in house, size of brick and mortar thickness and structural complexity of structures as well. In USA the range of normal house is 1000-2400 ft2 consisting of built up area. After deduction of doors and windows the built up area of single bedroom including all the four walls is in range of 300-600 ft2.
Brick calculation formula in ft2 for half or singular layer 4″ brick masonry wall
The formula for brick masonry wall in ft2 for singular, half feet brick as per thumb rule is given below;
Length of Brick Masonry wall x Height= Area in ft2
After that multiply the area in square foot by 4.5 to get the number of bricks required and then add 10% extra for haulage, carriage and wastage as well during the brick work installation.

How many bricks do I need for wall?
An average of 4.5 modular bricks per ft2 is required to construct the wall.
You need (100 x 4.5= 450), 450 modular bricks to built brick wall of 100 ft2 .
Similarly;
- Brick Wall of Area150 ft2 = 150 x 4.5 = 675 Nos. of bricks
- Brick Wall of Area180 ft2 = 180 x 4.5 = 810 Nos. of bricks
- Brick Wall of Area 200 ft2 = 200 x 4.5 = 900 Nos. of bricks
- Brick Wall of Area 300 ft2 = 300 x 4.5 = 1350 Nos. of bricks
- Brick Wall of Area 400 ft2 = 400 x 4.5 = 1800 Nos. of bricks
- Brick Wall of Area 500 ft2 = 500 x 4.5 = 2250 Nos. of bricks
- Brick Wall of Area 600 ft2 = 600 x 4.5 = 2700 Nos. of bricks
- Brick Wall of Area 800 ft2 = 800 x 4.5 = 3600 Nos. of bricks
- Brick Wall of Area 1000 ft2 = 1000 x 4.5 = 4500 Nos. of bricks
