While estimating for asphalt shingle roof, you’re always wondering that how many bundles of shingle do I need for a 1000 sq. ft. or how many bundles of shingle do I need for a 1200 sq. ft. or how many bundles of shingle do I need for a 1500 sq. ft. or how many bundles of shingle do I need for a 2000 sq. ft. or how many bundles of shingle do I need for a 3000 sq. ft. or any other area of roof.

A shingle is a material made of various materials such as wood, flagstone, metal, plastic and composite materials such as asphalt shingles. The shingle is used as roof covering material in different regions of the world.

The idea of requirement of shingle per square feet is necessary for giving accurate order of supply of shingles for home roof. The quantity of shingles for any roof area can be calculated by the simple mathematical calculations and thumb rule.

There are different types of roofs made in different countries according to the type of weather and climatic conditions. The calculations of square footage area for flat roof are quite simple because of simple shape.

How to know the roof area?

The roof area can be calculated by knowing the house footprint. While in case of pitched slope the calculations are not simple due to slope of roof.

If the building footprint is 1000 sq ft, then the roof surface will be same for flat roofs only but in case of pitched roofs the area of roof will be more than the building footprint due to its slope.

The Eves are lower edges of pitched roof which are projecting beyond the supporting walls. Eves overhangs can vary from few inches to a foot depending upon the requirement. But the suggested width of overhang is between 12’’ to 18’’.

The roof area of sloping roof is large than flat roof area because of this type of overhangs and slope.

Rule of thumb

According to rule of thumb the 3 bundles of 3-tab shingles cover a roof surface area of 100 square feet. There are 29 standard sized shingles in each bundle. The size measuring 12 inch ×36 inch is in each bundle.

Asphalt shingles and other type of roof shingles are available in market in bundles and 3 bundles are enough for covering of 100 square foot area of roof. The average size of roof is 1000 square foot so 30 bundles of 3-tab asphalt shingles will be required for covering of average roof.

Estimating asphalt shingle bundle for different types of shingles

There are two different types of shingles and amount required per 100 square feet is different in both the cases.

The 3 bundles of standard 3-tab asphalt shingles are required for 100 square feet. Other type of shingle is architectural shingle, and 4 bundles of shingles are required for covering a roof area 100 square feet.

Procedure for determination of amount of shingle

The following two steps can help in estimating the number of shingles required for a roof.

  • First calculate the surface area of your roof. For flat roofs the house footprint and roof area will be same except if any extra extension is provided. While in sloped roof area will be different and will be calculated by measurements.
  • Then divide the total area of roof by 100 and multiply by 3. As per general rule of thumb 3 bundles of shingles are required for 100 square feet area. So that’s why we will do this division and then multiplication.

Bundles of shingle for 1000 square feet roof

For covering a 100 square feet roof area 3 bundles of shingles are required. Similarly, the number of 3-tab bundles of shingles for 1000 square feet area will be 30 and number of architectural shingles will be 40 because 4 bundles of shingles cover a roof area of 100 square feet.

For 3-tab shingles

For Architectural shingles

  • Surface area of roof =1000 sq ft
  • For 100 sq ft roof area= 4 bundles of architectural shingles
  • Number of bundles of shingle for 1000 sq ft area= (1000/100) ×4
  • Number of bundles of shingle for 1000 sq ft area= 40

Bundles of shingle for 1200 square feet roof

The number of bundles of 3-tab standard size shingles for 1200 square feet will be 12×3=36.Similarly the number of architectural shingles will be 4×12=48.

For 3-tab shingles

  • Surface area of roof =1200 sq ft
  • For 100 sq ft roof area= 3 bundles of 3-tab standard size shingles
  • Number of bundles of shingle for 1000 sq ft area= (1200/100) ×3
  • Number of bundles of shingle for 1000 sq ft area= 36

For Architectural shingles

  • Surface area of roof =1200 sq ft
  • For 100 sq ft roof area= 4 bundles of architectural shingles
  • Number of bundles of shingle for 1200 sq ft area= (1200/100) ×4
  • Number of bundles of shingle for 1200 sq ft area= 48

Bundles of shingle for 1500 square feet roof

The number of bundles of 3-tab standard size shingles for 1500 square feet will be 15×3=45 because 100 square feet roof area is covered by 3 bundles of 3-tab shingles. Similarly, the number of architectural shingles will be 15×4=60.

For 3-tab shingles

  • Surface area of roof =1500 sq ft
  • For 100 sq ft roof area= 3 bundles of 3-tab standard size shingles
  • Number of bundles of shingle for 1500 sq ft area= (1500/100) ×3
  • Number of bundles of shingle for 1500 sq ft area= 45

For Architectural shingles

  • Surface area of roof =1500 sq ft
  • For 100 sq ft roof area= 4 bundles of architectural shingles
  • Number of bundles of shingle for 1500 sq ft area= (1500/100) ×4
  • Number of bundles of shingle for 1500 sq ft area= 60

Bundles of shingle for 2000 square feet roof

For covering a 100 square feet roof area 3 bundles of shingles are required. Similarly, the number of 3-tab bundles of shingles for 2000 square feet area will be 20×3= 60 and number of architectural shingles will be 20×4=80 because 4 bundles of shingles cover a roof area of 100 square feet.

For 3-tab shingles

  • Surface area of roof =2000 sq ft
  • For 100 sq ft roof area= 3 bundles of 3-tab standard size shingles
  • Number of bundles of shingle for 2000 sq ft area= (2000/100) ×3
  • Number of bundles of shingle for 2000 sq ft area= 60

For Architectural shingles

  • Surface area of roof =2000 sq ft
  • For 100 sq ft roof area= 4 bundles of architectural shingles
  • Number of bundles of shingle for 2000 sq ft area= (2000/100) ×4
  • Number of bundles of shingle for 2000 sq ft area= 80

Bundles of shingle for 3000 square feet roof

The number of bundles of 3-tab standard size shingles for 3000 square feet will be 30×3=90.Similarly the number of architectural shingles will be 30×4=120.

For 3-tab shingles

  • Surface area of roof =3000 sq ft
  • For 100 sq ft roof area= 3 bundles of 3-tab standard size shingles
  • Number of bundles of shingle for 3000 sq ft area= (3000/100) ×3

  • Number of bundles of shingle for 3000 sq ft area= (3000/100) ×4
  • Number of bundles of shingle for 3000 sq ft area= 120

Conclusion

Number of bundles of shingles required for roof can be calculated by keeping the mind the general rule of thumb. According to this rule 3 bundles of 3-tab standard size shingles cover 100 square feet area. Similarly, 4 bundles of architectural shingles covers a roof area of 100 square feet. By performing simple mathematical calculations, we can calculate the number of bundles of shingles required for the construction of any roof.
